List of Movies to Watch in 2020
Today is a fresh, new year—and with a new year comes a new batch of movies. 2020, especially, is an exciting year of us: the return of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a long hiatus since Avengers: Endgame , some exciting, long-awaited sequels, and other anticipated films that are totally worth your time and money. In this post, we gathered a list of movies to watch in 2020 to help you plan out your budget and schedule.
Black Widow
Starting off our list is a movie that many Marvel fans have been waiting for: an independent movie on Black Widow, one of the original six in the first Avengers film. Aside from a few flashbacks and some compelling character moments, Black Widow’s story is mostly shrouded in mystery. With a movie of her own, Marvel fans will finally learn more about the femme fatale heroine, and as the first Marvel movie to come out since Endgame , having an independent Black Widow film is a great way to continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a welcome addition to any list of movies to watch in 2020. Most of all, it will be the second female-led superhero film in the MCU, following Captain Marvel which would come to the delight of feminists.
Black Widow will be set to release in US theaters on May 1, 2020 and in theaters worldwide later on.
Birds of Prey
The film Suicide Squad in the year 2016 marked one of the first films of the DC Cinematic Universe—to less than stellar critical reception. As a result, Warner Bros, the company in charge of handling DC’s films, decided to make a reboot to this film, entitled Birds of Prey, based on the all-female superhero team in the comics. An interesting fact about the upcoming film: James Gunn, director of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, will be directing. Hopefully, Gunn will reignite interest in the DC films with his lauded methods of bringing personality and style in the movies and put the DC Extended Universe on the map as a franchise with good movies to watch.
Birds of Prey will start kicking in US theaters on February 7, 2020.
Wonder Woman 1984
As part of the DC’s “trinity,” Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic superhero characters in comic book history. It comes to no one’s surprise, then, that Warner Bros made an independent movie about the superheroine in 2017 that is well-received by both critics and fans alike. Because of this, a sequel film is set in course: Wonder Woman 1984, which adds more to the titular character’s origin story. What makes this movie worth watching is that it will feature her famous rival, The Cheetah. Hopefully, Wonder Woman 1984 will go alongside Birds of Prey in making many people’s lists of top movies to watch
Wonder Woman 1984 will be lassoing US theaters on June 5, 2020.
The New Mutants
A lot of people left the theater crying after watching the 2017 film Logan . From that point on, many wonder what the future of X-Men movies holds. X-Men: The Dark Phoenix was released last year with poor reviews, making a great and memorable movie like Logan long-warranted. While it is not sure how it is connected to the X-Men film franchise—or whether if it is connected at all—it will certainly be an interesting film for its novelty: a horror movie based on the comics. Now, that is something that may be worth watching!
The New Mutants will be mutating US theaters on April 3, 2020.
Godzilla vs. Kong
Godzilla vs. Kong is a highly anticipated movie for many monster film fans for two main reasons: (1) it is a long-awaited rematch between the two cult classic monsters since their fight in the 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla and (2) it serves as the crossover between the two monsters ever since their remake by the company Legendary Entertainment. The name alone kindles excitement among monster film fans—simple, yet effective, and an example of how to choose the best title for a material. With a movie like this on the rise, we could also expect the monster film genre to resurface (like Godzilla) and have more monster films on the rise. Right now, there are barely any monster films out in cinemas, making Godzilla the poster boy for the monster movie genre and, literally and commercially, the King of the Monsters. If you are going to make a list of movies to watch in 2020, always remember to have at least one monster film in it to commemorate the genre—and to let that one monster film be Godzilla vs. Kong.
Godzilla vs. Kong will roar in theaters worldwide starting November 20, 2020.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Spongebob Squarepants is one of the most iconic cartoon characters in history. Since his TV debut in 1999, the beloved, little sponge has had over 250 episodes and two feature-length films under his belt, making the upcoming Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run the third film in the franchise. What makes this movie interesting in particular is that it will be the first film since the passing of Stephen Hillenburg on November of 2018, leaving us wondering how Spongebob’s legacy will be continued especially in the advent of newer cartoons. Thankfully, the art style that is shown in the trailers is very similar to the cartoon’s, and the humor hits close to home with the cartoon’s as well. By virtue of the lovable Spongebob alone already makes this deserve a spot in the list of movies to watch in 2020.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run will be jellyfishing in US theaters starting in May 11, 2020.
The King’s Man
Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle are beloved for their incorporation of the spy film tropes, intentionally cheesy tone, and incredible action and cinematography. It is a fresh take on the spy movie genre as a whole and leaves many wanting for more. So, for the ladies and gents who love the Kingsman franchise, it will come to their delight to know that a third Kingsman installment will be coming out soon. The King’s Man is actually a prequel installment, set during World War I, which in itself is already an interesting premise as it may reveal more about Kingsman lore. Perhaps, the Kingsman service goes way back since the Victorian era? Maybe even Elizabethan era? Who knows? In any case, the Kingsman films so far are good movies to watch, and hopefully The King’s Man is no different.
The King’s Man will be suiting up in theaters on February 14, 2020.
Mulan
Mulan again? Disney’s efforts to remake its old animated classics into live-action versions have been apparent for the past few years, with Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and, recently, Lion King being some of the many existing live-action renditions out so far. With how Disney pulled off live-action remakes so far, it seems that the upcoming Mulan live-action remake will follow suit by retaining the line-up of musical songs from the original animated movie. But perhaps what makes Mulan stand out from the other live-action remakes is its plot and themes. The story is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan who pretends to be a man to protect his elderly father from being drafted into the army for the war against the Huns. It will be an interesting movie to release in today’s age for its feminist themes and hopefully will be one of the top movies to watch this year. Being one of Disney's strongest female leads, Mulan can become a topic on many academic essays, especially a comparison and contrast essay on the animated film and the live action version.
Mulan will be getting down to business in US theaters on March 27, 2020.
Fast & Furious 9
Ah, the Fast & Furious franchise—a franchise about street racing, spies, secret military weapons, evil corporations… yes, at some point, it admittedly got confusing where the movies started to go. Nevertheless, many people love the Fast & Furious films for various reasons , many of which are for the seemingly crazy premises listed above. The most recent installment of the franchise is the action-packed spin-off Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw , based on the titular characters who are rivals in the previous films. With the upcoming Fast & Furious 9, the excitement for the Fast & Furious films will be, once more, in full in ignition, and will be hitting many people’s lists as one of the good movies to watch this year.
Fast & Furious 9 will be racing to US theaters on May 22, 2020.
A Quiet Place: Part II
Quiet! Do you hear that? That is right: the critically acclaimed A Quiet Place from 2018 is getting a sequel. The stereotypical horror movie monster is often depicted as a super-strong, super-fatal entity that has large teeth and an ominous appearance. A Quiet Place set a new bar when it comes to horror monsters: what if there exist monsters that haunt you based on sound ? Sound is made in almost everything we do, making such monsters such a deadly force to be reckoned with. Monsters that cripple human beings based on one of the five basic senses is a simple, yet effective concept, one that inspired other movies such as Bird Box in Netflix. This year, we will see this concept taken further, hopefully expanding on these sound-based monsters. If done right, this horror flick will definitely deserve a spot in any list of movies to watch in 2020.
A Quiet Place: Part II will be making some noise in US theaters on March 20, 2020.
West Side Story
All right, Jets and Sharks. Listen up! There is going to be a new film adaptation of West Side Story. Yes, you got that right! Fans of the 1961 film adaptation of West Side Story will be pleased to know not only this, but that the celebrated filmmaker Steven Spielberg will be directing the film and actor Ansel Engort will be starring in it. Rife with social commentary and serious themes about race and society, West Side Story will definitely be a musical to remember in modern times, and absolutely a welcome addition to the list of movies to watch in 2020 and the line-up of musical films of recent history, alongside the recent Cats 2019 adaptation and the explosive film The Greatest Showman in 2018. Teachers will be delighted, too: they can now use this film as a material on teaching college students about how to write movie reviews, comparing this with the 1961 adaptation.
West Side Story will sing its hearts out in US theaters on December 18, 2020.
Bill & Ted Face the Music
Like, there will be another Bill & Ted movie? Excellent! Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey are two cult classics in the comedy genre of films. Bill, played by Alex Winter, and Ted, played by Keanu Reeves, are aspiring musicians who want to go big with their band, the “Wyld Stallyns,” which Rufus, a guide from the future played by George Carlin, reveals to the duo to be the key to creating a utopian society. The corny, light-hearted tone, the laidback humor, and the lovable personalities of the duo are just some of the many reasons why many people love the Bill & Ted movies and want more. After 29 years, fans have their answer: Bill & Ted Face the Music , with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves reprising their roles. While it remains to be seen whether someone will play as Rufus due to George Carlin’s passing in 2008, Face the Music is definitely a sequel that many have awaited for a long time, and one of the top movies to watch when it comes out.
Bill & Ted Face the Music will be afoot at theaters on July 3, 2020.
Top Gun: Maverick
“Thirty plus years since release. 1987 Golden Screen award, Favorite Motion Picture in the People’s Choice Awards of the same year. Yet, it did not a sequel.” Until recently, this had applied to the 1986 film Top Gun. Starring Tom Cruise, Top Gun follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in his training to be a potential airfighter in the Topgun program. As one of the best motivational movies for showing the hardships and struggles of being in the Navy, the film was beloved and popular—so much so that it now enjoys a spot in the National Film Registry in 2015 for preservation. Thirty years later, the celebrated film finally gets its sequel. With Tom Cruise reprising its role, Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel that is highly anticipated, especially by those who are eager to know what had happened to Maverick ever since his graduation from the Topgun program.
Top Gun: Maverick will be flying in US theaters on June 26, 2020.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
If there is another movie franchise that badly needs a sequel, who are you going to call? Ghostbusters! The 2016 reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise attempted to create a reimagined depiction of the paranormal specialists—to, unfortunately, a cold reception. Nothing can replicate the original cult classic film in 1984. “At least get us the original cast one more time before getting a new one!” some exclaim Well, come four years after the failed reboot, fans get their answer. Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be the third installment of the original franchise, made after three decades since Ghostbusters II, making Ghostbusters: Afterlife the sequel that fans everywhere have long-awaited for. The best part? The original cast will be reprising their roles! That alone makes Ghostbusters: Afterlife an undisputed spot in the list of movies to watch in 2020.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be busting US theaters on July 10, 2020.
